How Would You Score in the Dating Olympics?

By Charles Tran The XX Winter Olympic Games are in full swing in Torino, Italy, with athletes from around the globe vying to bring home the gold. Back at home, those in the dating game face equally stiff challenges the difficulty in meeting the right people, synchronizing overfilled calendars to schedule a date, and creating that medal-winning first impression. Although Im in a long-term relationship and thus have removed myself from the competition, I understand the hurdles faced by those in the dating game. As the founder of lunchSpark (www.lunchSpark.com), an online lunch networking and dating community, Im trying to bridge the gap between the virtual and real worlds. The site is equal parts meet-and-greet and restaurant reviews, and moves ahead of traditional online network and dating sites by taking the connection to the next level: meeting over lunch. When it comes to dating, lunch is a fun, casual way to connect, without the stress of traditional evening dates. Just as every Olympic athlete has a unique approach to his or her chosen sport, those in the dating game have their own strategies for coming up a winner. The following quiz will help you define your style in the Dating Olympics. Select the one answer for each question that most reflects your feelings. 1. Does the concept of speed dating a round robin where you spend three minutes with each of 20 potential dates appeal to you? a. Sure! Its a great way to immediately know whether or not you click with a potential date b. No way! I cant get a sense of who a person is in only three minutes. c. Definitely! I know exactly what Im looking for, and speed dating would let me compare each person to my mental checklist. 2. Whats your feeling about blind dates? a. I have nothing to lose, and Im intrigued by the mystery of a blind date. b. I love the unexpected, and can always find a way to have fun on a blind date. c. I cant stand blind dates. I want to be the one to choose who I go out with. 3. What type of first date most appeals to you: meeting for coffee, lunch, or dinner? a. Dinner I like the variables and the open-ended nature of an evening out b. Coffee A coffee house is a great place to start a conversation that can last anywhere from a few minutes to more than an hour. c. Lunch I like knowing what to expect, and the beauty of a lunch date is that is has a finite beginning and end. 4. How would you characterize your dating experiences over the past year? a. I love to date and have been on dates with at least a dozen different people. b. I havent gone on many traditional dates, but have met lots of fascinating people in a variety of settings. c. Ive gone on several first dates and have had a great time, but things havent worked out in the long term. Scoring: Add up the number of times you chose answer a, answer b, and answer c. The letter you chose most often corresponds to your style in the Dating Olympics: A - Downhill Racer: You hurl down the proverbial dating mountain with a devil-may-care attitude. Your goal isnt to establish a long-term relationship; rather, your enjoyment comes from the thrill of the chase. By trying to beat the clock to the finish line, the dating games Downhill Racer sometimes misses the scenery along the way. By all means, enjoy the ride. But be sure that you see the people you date as individuals. B - Halfpipe Hopeful: Just like a snowboarder dropping into the halfpipe, your approach to dating is laid back. You value both substance and style, and take the time to get to know your dates. Your bottom line, though, is having fun. Its true that dates shouldnt be work; they should be fun. At the same time, the tendency of Halfpipe Hopefuls to hang out and have a good time can hurt their chances of building a solid long-term relationship. There comes a time when you have to make a commitment, or the good ones will get away. C - Ice Dancer: An Olympic figure skater must control every element of his or her program, and each movement is carefully orchestrated. Your efforts to control your dating experience can serve to protect you both emotionally and physically, but youre a person, not a machine. Strong boundaries are crucial for a successful dating experience, which is why meeting for lunch can make for a perfect first date. Check out lunchSpark (www.lunchspark.com), relax over lunch, and youll open up and allow yourself to shine. The Universal Laws of Nature

By Christopher Walker There are five unique, but interconnected laws that describe and define the creation, maintenance and transformation of all of life. To really know these laws requires that you step beyond the conventions of your culture and reach out to a bigger perspective. There is no chaos, only a circumstance we cannot understand. These universal laws take you a long way to the understanding you may be searching for. The fifth law. The law of the one and the many. There is one universe, and many religions that describe it. There is one spirit within you, and many ego personas that express it. There is one leader in any organization, and many people who are employed to manifest it. There is one love in the human heart, and many emotions that come to express it. There is one humanity on earth, and many diverse cultures that fragment their uniqueness to celebrate it. There is one sun in our sky, and many planets that are obedient to it. There is one government in our country, and many laws to govern with. There is one ocean on our planet, and many rivers to feed it. There is one earth, and many mountains to divide it. There is one creation, and many people to evolve it. We live beneath an umbrella. We can rise to the top of one heap, only to find we are now at the bottom of the next. We are always humble to the law of the one and the many. You have many personas, many ego identities. Some you hide, and some you display - characters you play. If you add the characters you hide, to the characters you display, to the characters you live in virtual reality, to the characters you express in reality, you will find you are the one. We are the sum of the parts, and the sum of the parts is one. We are not different to anyone. We are all the same. Expressed uniquely in the way we demonstrate our fragments, but completely identical if we add those parts to become one. The ego thinks it is the one, but it is a mere fragment. An emotion. The ego thinks it is separate to others, and therefore, unique. The ego thinks it can change, but it cannot. The ego is a fragment, the spirit is the whole. Spirituality is to know that you are whole, one total being with many fragmented parts. Each of them incomplete, each of them worthy of love. The fourth law. The law of appreciation What you appreciate gets bigger, what you dont appreciate gets smaller. Appreciation builds, evolves and creates harmony. Lack of appreciation motivates self-consciousness, self-depreciation and self- destruction. There is nothing to change, only something to appreciate. You cannot change, you can only appreciate yourself as you are. Appreciation is an attractive force, depreciation is a repulsive force. From the vantage point of the one, we see ourselves as many parts. Pain and self-consciousness causes us to lose the perspective of the one, and fall into the many parts. Then, we cannot appreciate who we are, so we try to change it. Anything we try to change has power over us, anything we appreciate we have power over. If you appreciate your lover’s faults, they are not faults, but beautiful assets. If you criticize and try to change someone, you are below them, they have power over you. You have no fault. You are not broken. Neither is the world or your lover. There are some things you might not appreciate. The problem is not the thing itself, but your inability to appreciate that thing. Once you appreciate things, they have no power over you. You are free. This is the talent of a great lover, and the talent of the greatest Gods. They appreciate you. The third law. The law of Abundance There is nothing missing. It just changes in form. You have every character trait, some you express at work, some at home, some in virtual reality, and some in reality. You are everything you see and everything you dream. There is nothing missing in you or your beloved. Your judgements are false, they are your ego. To separate yourself from others means you can criticize and blame them. But there is no them, there is no you. You are everyone you see, nobody outside of you is doing more to you than you do to yourself. You are not unique, you are like everyone else. You have every trait, every characteristic. Delusion tells you that you can change or be different. Maybe you think you can be better than others, but in this one thought alone you prove that false. You are everything, and connected to everything. There are five elements - ether, air, fire, water and earth. The universe is made up of these five elements. So are you. There are varying degrees of each that cause individual differences, but they are one soup. They are just energy in different states, different forms, and you have them all in varying degrees. You are like the universe, complete. Matter evolving from earth to ether. Nothing is ever missing, it just changes in form. We are all shy. Some at work, some at home, some in regard to money, and some in regard to change. We are all shy, nothing is missing. The second law. The law of growth. Chaos causes change. Chaos stimulates challenge and confronts the status quo. Chaos breaks deadlocks and promotes change. Order on the other hand rests us, gives us time to absorb, digest, take it all in, to master our space, and become good at what we do. Too much order and we stagnate. Too much chaos and we burn out. Growth occurs at the border between the two. The purpose of love is growth. Love is both chaos and order. Growth means to convert chaos to order. Chaos is what we dont appreciate. Therefore, growth means to convert those things we dont like, into those things we do like. That is how we get more love. We take things we dont appreciate (chaos) and turn them into things we do appreciate (order) In a relationship there is a perfect balance of support and challenge. Challenge is chaos (things we dont appreciate) and support is order (things we do appreciate). When we first meet our lover, there are more things that we appreciate than dont appreciate. This is called infatuation. After some time there can be more things that we dont appreciate (challenges) than we appreciate (support). Then we resent our partner and want to leave. The truth is, there is always a perfect balance of support and challenge in life. We were just blinded in the beginning. The first law. The law of balance There are two sides to every coin. This is how we convert issues we dont appreciate into issues we do appreciate. We turn chaos to order by seeing the other side of the coin. There is always a silver lining to every cloud. There are always two ways to see any one thing. One way is to see the dark, the other way is to see the light. The wise person sees both, but then focuses their mind on the light. The emotionally disturbed person tries to eliminate the dark, thinking it will go away. For every thing we move from dark to light, a new balance is created. So the more light we see, the more happiness we have, the more fun, and the more peace, then, the more dark, the more sadness, the more misery, the more drama we have. Duality is the cause of emotion, and there cannot be an upper without a downer. To break the mould means to see two sides. For example, in our western culture we might say laziness is bad. But in the Spiritual Culture, laziness may be exactly the same as mindfulness or contentment. In the west, we see inspired and enthusiastic as good. In the Eastern language, we might call those same behaviours running away, unable to be in the moment, lacking stillness. There are two sides to everything. Re-label those things you dont appreciate. Find the blessing in them. They cant be eradicated, only appreciated. Extract from my new book, Sacred Love. Mysteries of Syndrome X Revealed

By Emily Clark Ive put on 40 pounds in one year! It doesnt matter how much I workout, I cant lose weight. My doctor must think Im eating pizzas in the closet. With nearly 4 million Americans weighing in at over 300 pounds, is it any wonder the above cries are heard each and every day by countless frustrated people who cant lose weight? One such cause for the ever increasing need to buy larger pants is a disease known as Syndrome X. Syndrome X is also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome, Metabolic Syndrome X and Insulin Resistance. It is a very common disease; however it is widely overlooked by many medical professionals. One statistic reveals 1 in 3 people suffer from it. This syndrome is a precursor to developing Diabetes Type 2. Sufferers have a high level of insulin. Their bodies are unable to process all the insulin that is being made from their diet. As a result, they become insulin resistant. Think of it like this: You knock on someones door because you want to come in. If they dont answer, what normally happens? You knock again, right? Sometimes you may even knock a third time, trying to gain entry. Insulin works in the same manner. The pancreas produces insulin (knock). Some foods cause the body to produce even higher levels of insulin (knock again). Once you become insulin resistant, develop Syndrome X, the body is unable to properly process the glucose, therefore the pancreas tries to make up for it by producing even more insulin. It thinks no one is home and just keeps making more. The main purpose of glucose is to be used as fuel for the cells in the body to produce energy. Unprocessed glucose translates into fat. If the body keeps making it and its not being processed, where does it go? Hips, thighs, stomach, and buttocks, thats where! In addition to hypertension and heart disease, elevated insulin may be associated with weight gain and difficulty with weight loss, other blood sugar problems such as hypoglycemia, and some menstrual related imbalances. Genetics is partially responsible for causing this disease. More likely though is lifestyle. In many cases years of high starch, processed foods, simple sugars, lack of exercise, smoking, and increased stress may be the culprit for Metabolic Syndrome X. Now what? For starters, start exercising today. Increase water intake and totally omit starches, sugars, processed foods from your diet. Limit or omit caffeine. Try to maintain at least one third of your daily food intake to vegetables. Ask your doctor to test your sugar levels. Change what youre eating and get walking and youll be amazed at the pounds start to fall off. The fatigue and fuzziness will start to disappear and in turn youll feel much better. What You Need in Your Marketing Calendar

By Doug Edge Marketing calendars are used by many businesses to help keep sales pipelines full of new prospective customers. Small businesses may just keep a simple calendar with handwritten items on the dates that marketing efforts need to be completed. These items might include attending a trade show, sending out an email campaign, or placing a buy for a magazine advertisement. Larger corporations typically have a more detailed marketing calendar planned out a year in advance. Regardless of the size of the business a good marketing calendar does have to have some key elements to assure the monthly activities in which the business is investing are paying off. Here are a few things you need to include in your marketing calendar in order to maximize your return on your marketing investment: 1. List all of the activities you plan to do by month. Activities should include efforts like direct mail, keyword search, media buying, PR, attending trade shows and networking events, and anything else you think will help bring awareness to your business and generate qualified leads. 2. Estimate how much it will cost each month to execute each activity. If you dont have enough information about the cost of an activity, make an educated guess and make your estimate higher than you believe it will really be. 3. Estimate the number of prospects the activity will expose your brand or message to and record these in the calendar as impressions. For example, you may send out a press release and an industry trade publication prints it. In this scenario, the number of subscribers to the magazine would count as the number of impressions. 4. Estimate the results each activity will bring to your company in the form of revenue. Usually this is measured in the form of new customers with an average annual value associated with the revenue this customer represents to your business. Depending on the activity, the results of the effort may assist in retaining an already existing customer for a longer period of time. The value of this activity may be a more challenging number to represent, but still make an effort to assign revenue to the effort. For example, hosting an open house for your business may bring in both new prospects and current customers. If the activity results in one new customer who will spend $5,000 over the next 12 months and 10 current customers with a combined value to your business of $50,000, you might want to represent the activity as having a $15,000 return. Remember, when completing a marketing calendar, you will likely include activities that you have done in the past. By doing so, you will have a results history to reference when filling in the numbers. Marketing activities that you have not done before should have results represented in the form of goals you would like to achieve for the investment you are making. 5. Summarize your totals. Each month, you should be able to see the total number of marketing activities you have going on, how many people will be exposed to your business, and what type of results you will be achieving. Reviewing and updating these totals with actual numbers will allow you to look at your marketing history and make better decisions about the types of activities you should spend more time and energy doing. Long-term Marketing Calendars can really impact the bottom line. In the short-term, it will help hold your team accountable to completing tasks and keeping the sales and marketing efforts in motion. If done properly, a Marketing Calendar will keep you on budget and force activities to be tied into results. The Marketing Calendar is the one part of your overall marketing plan that needs constant updating. Be sure to add impromptu marketing efforts that may have not made the calendar originally. These marketing efforts need to be tracked as well, and by putting them in the calendar, you will have a record of the activity for future consideration. Symptoms Of Depression

By Milos Pesic In normal daily life, it is obvious that people overlook the general symptoms of depression. Any kind of manic disorders or prolonged depressive mood should be brought to the immediate notice of a doctor, who will guide you through all the symptoms that depressive people have. Finding a common symptom for depression is difficult, as there are many of them. People suffering from depression do not exhibit each and every symptom of depression. The symptoms of depression vary in accordance with the severity and seriousness of the problem. However, there are certain symptoms which people can easily identify as root causes of depression. Isolation, low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, and pessimist thinking towards life are general symptoms of depression. Continuous withdrawal from ones pleasurable activities and things, especially hobbies, is a tell-tale symptom of depression. This results in fatigue, loss of energy and interest in every walk of life. You dont get proper sleep, do not eat properly and sometimes even live in isolation for hours. This is not a normal life. These are symptoms of depression and if not diagnosed at an early stage can cause serious health problems. Depression patients find it extremely difficult to concentrate on a particular thing. Lack of interest in everything usually results in inattentiveness and a low concentration level. If any one of your near and dear friends or family members exhibits such symptoms, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. A doctor can really help your friend or family member by understanding the intensity and root cause of depression. Unusual sleeping habits, sudden gain or loss of weight, and suicidal thoughts and even attempts are clear indications or symptoms that he or she is suffering from depression. Restlessness and irritable behavioral patterns accompanied by poor mental health condition such as headaches, digestive disorders, and body pains are also some symptoms of depression. Depression is a common problem. It is just like any other illness which can be treated effectively once the cause is identified. There is no real test for depression. Depression can be treated only once its symptoms are identified. Once diagnosed, your doctor, psychiatrist, psychotherapist or psychologist can help you overcome that depressive mood and help you live life to the fullest. No Money Down And High Loan-To-Value Home Purchases

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jason_Bertrand]Jason Bertrand In many cases it is difficult to obtain financing with little or no down payment. The lender will usually look for very high credit scores and a very thorough payment history. In some cases it may be easier than one would think. Twenty years ago it was always a rule of thumb that one needed to put down at least 20% in order to purchase a home. Last year over 40% of home purchases were made at 100% loan to value. One reason that people avoid high loan-to-value loans is the fact that a lender will require mortgage insurance if the loan-to-value ratio exceeds 80%. Loan to value is the ratio of the loan in comparison to the value of the home. For example: Home Value = $100,000 Loan Amount = $80,000 Loan-to-Value ratio = 80% In this example the loan to value ratio is 80% because the loan amount is 80% of the value of the home. Mortgage insurance is a policy that protects the lender in the case of default by the borrower. One way around mortgage insurance is to take out what is called a piggy back loan. A piggy back loan is taking out a first mortgage for 80% of the value, in the case of the example $80,000 and a second mortgage for the remaining 20% which would equal $20,000. You are now in a situation where you have a 100% financing situation but are not open to mortgage insurance. Generally the interest rate on a second mortgage is higher than the interest rate on the first mortgage, but the difference is less expensive than what the mortgage insurance would cost. Another way to finance a home with very little money down is to work the closing costs into the scenario. A lender will generally allow a seller to pay a certain amount of the closing costs. This allows for a higher loan to value ratio. High-Loan-To-Value loans allow both home buyers and investors to keep cash on hand for home improvements or other investments and are a great way to purchase a home without large amounts of cash on hand. Stone Carving Tips: Selecting the Right Stone

By Steve Walker I have run my own stone and marble workshop for over twenty five years and it became a regular occurrence to have visitors looking to buy a piece of stone or marble to try out stone carving. I have a soft spot for all wannabee artists so I would never charge for the stone, asking instead that they bring back their piece of work so that I could see how they got on. In all those years no-one ever came back! Now I know that most people are really decent and would have come back to show me their efforts, so I have put this lack of response down to the fact that most of these novice carvers simply chose the wrong type of materials to start with and therefore never actually managed to finish the piece of work. Most of the hopefuls I saw over the years wanted to carve marble and so, in spite of my advice to try a softer stone, they trolled off happily with a nice piece of white Carrara or Italian Botticino Fiorito never to be seen again. (by me anyway!) The simple fact is that stone and especially marble carving is hard work. Unless you choose a soft and relatively easy to work type of stone to start with and you select the right tools, you will easily become discouraged and give up long before you are able to develop the practical skills necessary to work the harder stones and marble. To help would be stone carvers choose the right type of stone, I have tried to create a kind of Mohs Scale of hardness of the kinds of stone that you are likely to find in your local stone yards. This is not a scientific scale, it is based not only on hardness but also on the practical workability of the stone. I have assumed that you will be working with hand tools not power tools. The scale is numbered 1-10. 1 being the softest stone and 10 being the hardest. 1: Cotswold Stone. Tools: Hardened steel chisels with wooden handles similar to wood chisels used with a Wooden mallet. Steel chisels with steel bulb end, for use with lead mallet or dummy. Can be sawn with a hand saw just like a timber saw. Advantages: Very soft to work. all types of chisel will work. Can be cut to size with a hand saw, excellent for practising hammer and chisel technique. Disadvantages: : Finished carvings will have poorly defined detail, the stone is too coarse to give a sharp finish. Risk of exposing hard shell in the course of work this may spoil the look of the finished job. Too weak to easily make thin panel carvings for example house signs or decorative plaques. Conclusion: : May be the right material for larger sculptural pieces. 2: Bath Stone. Tools: Hardened steel chisels with wooden handles similar to wood chisels. Wooden mallet. Steel chisels with steel bulb end, for use with lead mallet or dummy. Can be sawn with a hand saw just like a timber saw. Advantages: : Soft to work. all types of chisel will work. Can be cut to size with a hand saw, excellent for practising hammer and chisel technique. Disadvantages: : Risk of exposing hard shell in the course of work this may spoil the look of the finished job. Too weak to easily make thin panel carvings for example house signs or decorative plaques. Conclusion: : Finer grain than Cotswold etc. Better definition of carving. Good choice for first project. 3: Portland Stone. Tools: Hardened Steel chisels with steel bulb end, used with wooden masons mallet. Fine tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: : Memorial grade is a very high quality stone, fine grained good definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings for example house signs or number plaques. Disadvantages: : Availability of finer grade material. Some risk of exposing hard shell in the course of work this may spoil the look of the finished job. Conclusion: : Finer grain than Cotswold or Bath stone etc. Better definition of carving. Good choice for first project but harder to work than bath stone. 4: Portuguese limestone. Tools: Hardened Steel chisels used with steel hammer. Fine tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: : High quality stone, fine grained very good definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings, for example house signs or number plaques. Readily available from fireplace manufacturers . Disadvantages: : Not often available in sizes thicker than 30mm. Conclusion: : Finer grain than any of the previous stones. Better definition for carving. Good choice for first project but harder to work than bath stone. 5: Italian Black Slate. Tools: Fine steel chisels, tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: : Very fine grained very good definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings, for example house signs or number plaques. Disadvantages: : Hard to work, will chip easily while carving. Not for exterior use. Conclusion: : Good start if you want to carve slate. 6: York Stone. Tools: Tungsten chisels only, tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: : High quality stone, fine grained very good definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings, for example house signs or number plaques. Readily available from garden centres. Disadvantages: : Very hard to work. steel tools will blunt very quickly, Dust is hazardous so wear a mask! Conclusion: : Not a good choice for novice carvers. 7: Welsh Grey Slate. Tools: Fine steel chisels, tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: : Very fine grained excellent definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings, for example house signs or number plaques. Very strong. Readily available. Ideal for exterior use. Disadvantages: : Hard to work, will chip easily while carving. Conclusion: : Super quality slate but not for novices. 8: Westmoreland or Cumberland Green Slate. Tools: Tungsten chisels, tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: : Very fine grained excellent definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings, for example house signs or number plaques. Very strong. Disadvantages: : Very hard to work, tends to chip easily while carving. Ideal for exterior use. Conclusion: : Super quality slate but not for novices. 9: Marble. Tools: Tungsten chisels only, tungsten carvers chisels used with small steel club hammer. Advantages: Very fine grained excellent definition of detail. Strong enough to make thin panel carvings, for example house signs or number plaques. Disadvantages: : Very hard to work. Conclusion: : Try softer materials first, if you must try marble look for a paper white marble from Turkey, take the advice of your local mason! 10: Granite. Tools: Nuclear powered laser cutters only! Advantages: :Super Hard. Disadvantages: : Ridiculously hard to work by hand. Conclusion: :Try bashing your own kneecaps with a hammer, it will hurt less! That concludes Walkers Scale of Hardness. I have almost certainly forgotten some stones and as the scale is based on my experiences over the years other people may have differing opinions. If you are a stonemason or carver and have a different view, or you have a local stone you think should be included on the list please contact me and I will consider editing or adding to this article accordingly.
